IC443 Jellyfish Nebula

30 Jan 2025

This is the Jellyfish Nebula. It’s a beautiful but rather faint nebula in Gemini. This one took me a while to image because of cloud and moon. I feel like this deserves more but I’m reasonably happy with it for now.

NGC2174 Monkey Head Nebula

03 Jan 2025

This is the Monkey Head Nebula. I’ve done this one in the past and never made a good job of it so I decided it was time to revisit on a rare clear night here in UK. The sky was reasonably dark and I managed to gather some nice data. I also experimented with a new technique where I combined a wavelet enhanced nebula core using a transprency mask in Gimp. It let me get some nice detail in the core without increasing noise elsewhere in the image. I’m reasonably happy with this one for now.

NGC896 Heart Nebula

30 Nov 2024

This is part of the Heart Nebula. Unfortunately, it’s larger than my FOV but I’ve got the most interesting part. The data for this was good but there’s so many ways to process it that I got somewhat lost. This is the result of a week of trying over and over until I have something that I’m half happy with. No doubt I’ll process it yet again at some point. Note WeBo1 at the bottom left. This was only discovered in 1995 and now every hobbyist with even cheap equipment can see it!

IC405 Flaming Star Nebula

20 Nov 2024

This is the flaming star nebula. I’ve never imaged this target before so I was excited to see what I could get from it, especially as a first narrowband image on my new scope. The sky was variable quality and a few days after full moon. I managed to get 4 hours of data on this target with really good guiding and very low hfr. I processed as usual with Siril and with Graxpert and I’m so happy with the result, I’m tempted to move onto another target rather than get more time here.

M33 Triangulum Galaxy

12 Nov 2024

This is M33 Triangulum Galaxy. It’s not a great image but it’s first light on my new William Optics GT71. Unfortunately, it was taken on a night where the moon was almost full and I only had a few hours of clear sky. Never the less, I’m happy with it for just 2 hours exposure. It’s mostly ok with a little bit of adjustment needed to improve backfocus. I have a filter drawer to add anyway so this can wait until later.
